To get spot free water, you need to remove the dissolved minerals (TDS) from your tap water before the final rinse. Water spots are mineral deposits left behind when ordinary water evaporates, so once you bring the water down to near-zero TDS, using deionisation (DI) or reverse osmosis (RO), it dries clean with no spots and no towel drying. For most people at home, an inline DI tank is the fastest, simplest way to do it.
Why your tap water leaves spots
Tap water carries dissolved calcium, magnesium and salts, measured as total dissolved solids (TDS) in parts per million (ppm). When water dries on glass, paint or panels, the water evaporates but the minerals don't, they're left behind as chalky white spots. The higher your TDS, the worse the spotting. Getting “spot free water” simply means getting that TDS as close to 0 ppm as possible.
The 4 ways to get spot free water
1. Deionisation (DI), best for home and on-the-go
A DI tank packed with ion-exchange resin strips the mineral ions out of your water as it flows through, producing 0 ppm output on demand. You connect it inline between your hose and nozzle, use it for the final rinse, and air-dry. No power, no plumbing, fully portable. Resin depletes over time and needs replacing. 2. Reverse osmosis (RO), best for high volume
RO pushes water through a fine membrane that filters out most dissolved solids. It produces very low-TDS water but more slowly, and wastes some water in the process. Best for detailing shops and fixed, plumbed-in installations.
3. Distilled water, only for tiny jobs
Distillation boils water and condenses the steam, leaving minerals behind. The result is near-0 TDS, but producing enough to rinse a car is slow and expensive. Best for very small surfaces only.
4. Water softener, won't actually work
This is the most common mistake. A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, which reduces scale, but the total dissolved solids stay in the water, so it still spots. It reduces scale build-up, but it will not give you a spot free rinse.

The easiest method, step by step
For most people, an inline DI tank is the winner:
- Wash and rinse as normal with tap water.
- Check your tap TDS with a meter (most Australian tap water reads 50 to 300+ ppm).
- Switch your final rinse through the DI tank so the water comes out at ~0 ppm.
- Rinse the entire surface thoroughly with the pure water.
- Pack up and let it air-dry: no towel needed.

How do you know it's working?
Put a TDS meter on the tank's output. If your tap reads 150 ppm and the tank output reads 0 to 10, you've got spot free water. When that output number starts climbing, the resin is exhausted: replace it with a Resin Replacement Kit and you're back to 0.
